I'd like to add some herbs to my garden with the following requirments:
Fragrant - not just when u smell them but as u walk past them
Evergreen - so they are also pretty in winter
Height at least knee-high
Requiring little or no maintanence
I think Lavender, and Thyme fit the bill. Have u any other ideas? |

You can of course, it grows will grow outdoors in plant hardiness zones 5 to 10, check out your plant hardiness zone here http://www.gardenplansireland.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=132
Two more herbs to try are peppermint (Mentha piperita) and spearmint (Mentha spicata). These can spread quite a bit by underground runners, so maybe line your large planting hole with plastic. |

Try purple Sage (Salvia purpurea) its aromatic and colourful.
Catnip (Calamintha nepeta) maybe too low for you but it is great sprawling over the edges of paths _________________ If you benefited from irishgardeners.com, please link to us or tell others, so that the site can grow and benefit more gardeners.

I would suggest, Cilantro(corriander ) dill, lots of mint. I would also keep in mind that when you handle these herbs they give off a great aroma. On the lavender, research they different species and plant a variety, it is a slow grower, but worth the wait.

How does Rosemary do in Ireland?
Here in GA, USA it grows without any care, except a bit of extra water in Summer.
It is fragrant when warmed by the sun, is evergreen, it grows about knee high with the amount of trimming I do for cooking, potpourri, sachets etc.
I have also just started another one which I am training as a Bonsai.
Avoid the peppermint and spearmint unless you have a way of controling the runners. they die back in winter anyway.
Other plants that remain green over the winter here are: common sage, lavender, and oregano.
Hope that helps |

No problem here in Ireland , Mrs.Bugs uses it a lot with lamb . Also makes her own mint jelly to accompany the lamb .
My way of stopping the mint from spreading is to pull it up by the roots , (we use a lot ) and replant the root for new plants as nessessary .
well KK you are getting lots of suggestions there
