It looks like some kind of a Poplar, but I couldn't get closer than that.

as you say it could be Poplar possible "Lombardy Poplar "
Hard to tell with a close up of the leaves.

I'm not sure, but it might be a Pyrus. Have you seen its flowers?

Hi, I think scirpus is right. It looks like, Pyrus calleryana, A common street tree in the U.S. The variety 'Chanticleer' begins it life as a column then becomes more spreading and pyramidal as it ages. The leaves are definately pear-like and those leaf buds in the other picture are very fine as in pear, rather than the usual plump buds of Populus.
