| Bill, my hackles are up and my heels are dug in... I'll get back to Ms Upton later with the points you (and I) raised and see what she has to say for herself. Will keep you posted. |

Good man! It's time everyone asked questions instead of accepting the silly standard answers they are trained to give.

Well, another day, another response. This time more detailed (in response to my more detailed queries). Not much by way of new information though - any of my queries re cost were not answered as the information was deemed commercially sensitive (the composting is tendered comercially). A bit of a dead end really.
As for what happens to the compost, apparently DCC offered 15,000 bags of the compost free last summer from 4 of its recycle centres (I didn't see any) The green waste is sold to a company called Enrich who produce compost from it.
One useful piece of info is that I should have a brown bin by June. It'll be €2 per lift (standing charges will be covered by the existing standing charges) But I'd be happy with that - it saves the petrol driving to the recycle centre and battling the garden rubbish into the back of the car.

Irish gardeners way of telling you to put up a feminine avatar . although on other forums I frequent I reckon a lot of the blokes are actually women pretending to be blokes. Saves unwanted attention.

Well, I'm not going to look as if I'm press-ganging you into doing anything, so if you are happy with that, that's OK.
If, in my jobs over the years, my employer asked where am I buying the seeds from and how much does it cost and I said, sorry, that information is commercially sensative, iI'd be sacked on the spot. Of course he needs to know, he's bloody paying for it. Ms Upton is now treating you with contempt. All you are doing is asking what's happening to the hard-earned bucks they are taking from you.
Sometimes fights with Local Councils take a very long time because they think they aren't answerable to you who pays your tax, therefore their wages. I've had a battle wih Meath County Council for nearly 4 years, I dug in my heels and responded to every one of there replies wih a request for justification, they never could justify it but I refused to back down, my fight is now being resolved this year to a greater extent than I had hoped.

Oh boy! You're a tough cookie Mr. Bill! Well done on your success btw.
Maybe I'm being overly pessimistic in these overly pessimistic times about my chances of success in getting the charges revoked, but at least they've told me of a solution that will work for me for now aka the brown bin. The first three months will be free and I intend to make full use of them! My problem will be finding somewhere to store the bin - I think it will have to live out front of the house as there's no more bin space in the back.
(And I'll work on a feminine avatar! Bill's big pink flower is pretty feminine ) |

Woops! did I refer to you in the masculine? That's not a flower, it's an orchid
Don't forget, when dealing with local concils or government officials, they are trained to reply in a manner that either makes you give up asking because your banging your head on a brick wall, or they reply in a manner that makes you think 'woops! better back down, they don't like that'. Unfortunately, they haven't been trained in dealing with persistence, or going over their head

Here in Cork we also have to pay for garden or green waste. A friend of mine from the UK ( Liverpool) was with me a couple of years ago when I went out with it and could not believe we were charged for green waste! They had to pay for everything except green waste as it was essential for the landfill site. I dont know if that is still the case but it does make sense to me. What if nobody took green waste to these landfills?? _________________ Always learning! |

Here in Scotland as in the rest of the UK garden waste is uplifted free from April till November , We have a wheelie bin with a green lid which takes only garden waste. Most councils in UK now have composting centres which turn the stuff into garden compost which is sold back to the public . Some councils I believe, will supply allotment sites in their area with lorry loads free or very cheaply. I was also very surprised to read that councils in Ireland charge for disposal, puting garden waste in landfill is a waste of a valuable resource

Putting green waste into landfill is also dangerous!
It wouldn't be the first time that houses were built on land that had been filled with high amounts of green matter. The build-up of methane caused explosions. I know it's not always happening every day, but tell that to the people who were affected.
