The National Parks and Wildlife Service [North Midlands Region] is to host the "Wonderful Willow" event at their Education Centre in Ballinafad, Co. Sligo. This free public event will take place from 2.00 - 5.00 pm on Sunday 1st of March as part of the regions educational activities for Tree Week in association with the Tree Council of Ireland. All ages are encouraged to come along to this informative and fun event. Some of the activities will be out-door and so participants are advised to wear suitable clothing and footwear. Participants are kindly asked to register in the reception area at the far end of the building as soon as they arrive. Children must be supervised by parents / guardians at all times.
Activities at the "Wonderful Willow" event will include the following:
Outdoor Willow Dome and Willow Fedge Workshop - members of the public of all ages are invited to come along at any time during the afternoon when they can learn how to make a very simple, yet valuable, wildlife feature for their own garden by participating in building a willow dome and / or a fedge (a type of fence / hedge) in the Centre grounds or just observing as others have a go.
Indoor Talk on the Ecological Value of Willow - Dr. Judit Kelemen, Ecologist, will be giving a short, but interesting presentation on a number of occasions during the afternoon on willow and, in particular, the value of willow for wildlife.
Indoor Information Stand
Some literature on the various aspects of willow will be available at the information stand in the reception area of the centre. A number of items made form willow will also be on display here.
Close by the stand there will also be an opportunity to find out a little more about willow as a as a bio fuel, on a small scale, from a local man who successfully grows and uses willow for fuel for his own home.
Basket Making from Willow Workshop - Willow has always been associated in Irish culture with the ancient craft of basketry. Teresa Downs, from Co. Donegal will be giving yet another of her very popular workshops on basket making in the Education Centre. Numbers for this event are limited and places must be booked in advance by contacting Martina at 087 66 24 901. If Martina is not available to take your call, please leave your name and a telephone number at which a message can be left for you. Martina will then call you back to inform you as to whether or not a place is available for you for this workshop. Places will be allocated on a first call, first served basis. This workshop is free of charge to the public.
Willow Story and Fun Time - An ideal activity for the younger members of the public ... little people can sit in the sensory garden [weather permitting - otherwise this will be an indoor activity] and hear a story about the willow tree in Ireland long ago. Children will then have an opportunity to make there own magical willow decoration to take home with them.

Basket Making from Willow Workshop - Willow has always been associated in Irish culture with the ancient craft of basketry. Teresa Downs, from Co. Donegal will be giving yet another of her very popular workshops on basket making in the Education Centre. Numbers for this event are limited and places must be booked in advance by contacting Martina at 087 66 24 901. If Martina is not available to take your call, please leave your name and a telephone number at which a message can be left for you. Martina will then call you back to inform you as to whether or not a place is available for you for this workshop. Places will be allocated on a first call, first served basis. This workshop is free of charge to the public.
Willow Story and Fun Time - An ideal activity for the younger members of the public ... little people can sit in the sensory garden [weather permitting - otherwise this will be an indoor activity] and hear a story about the willow tree in Ireland long ago. Children will then have an opportunity to make there own magical willow decoration to take home with them.
