I recently got a lorry-load (approx 16 ton) of excellent veg-growing top-soil (loamy and a bit of sand mixed in) for less than 300 euro.
Also, I have made raised beds with 2x2 pegs and 5x1 boards (rough un-treated) very cheaply. The same guy gets the top-soil and timber.
PM me if you are interested and I'll send you contact info. |

linseed oil is a good wood preservative as the oil soaks into the wood this will stop water being absorbed . the wood will last longer without nasty chemicals

“Envirogrind based in Pettigo specialise in quality topsoil and fertiliser.
The company makes topsoil and soil feed.
They charge about €25 per cubic metre of topsoil, which is good value for money. It goes through a turning process, which heats the soil up to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This kills off all of the weed seeds and soil born diseases.
Delivery is expensive so it would be better to collect yourself if you have a large trailer. Failing that you could club together with other gardeners to get it delivered. The factory is open to public groups such as school visits

I'm building two raised bed for the first time this season. Does anyone have any idea how much soil would be required to fill two 4x8 foot beds 9 inches high?
Annamoe99 I'd be interested in the top soil and wood materials mentioned above. The prices seem very good. Assuming the amount required to fill two 4x8 foot beds won’t be anywhere close to 16 tons do you think it would be too little to call the said guy who delivered your soil?
Thanks GD! |

Gardening daddy -
The guy who supplied my topsoil will also deliver it in 1 ton bags. He'll supply the timber too. I think he'd be happy to deliver to West Dublin. A sale is a sale!
I have PMd you his number.
I'd say about 2 ton of topsoil would be about right for what you describe.
I might be talking to him later myself so I'll tell him you might be phoning.
If I can be any more help, don't hesitate to ask |

| Actually, 1 ton of soil should be enough for you. |

Hello
this might help you with your calculation for soil requirement
8' x 4' is 32' x 3/4' = 24cubic foot
divided by 9 is 2.7 cubic yards , one cubic yard is a ton
Regards
Ian. |

This is a great site. Scroll down until you get to the big video and then scroll down the side menu until you find " Building a raised bed" . After that just watch a few more videos as she has great ideas. I am going to give it a go this summer with four raised beds for now.
Best of luck. |
