For the first times in decades, sales of fruit and vegetable plants are outstripping flowers across the world -- and it appears Ireland is following the global trend.
Sales of fruit and vegetable plants and seeds have increased sharply in Britain and the US, as allotments, vegetable patches and balcony gardening grow in popularity.
Ireland is no different, according to Bord Bia, whose sales figures show that the value of herb, fruit and vegetable plants sold here jumped from €9m in 2001/02 to €15m in 2007/08 -- a 66pc increase in sales. When inflation and other factors are taken into account, actual growth amounts to 44pc.
