I'm very interested in sustainable living and I'm currently embracing the idea of permaculture in our garden and home. Making use of all space is one of the ways to improve crop production from a garden/home, as is using perennial varieties ... that means crops that only need planting once and go on to crop year after year.
So far I've planted a few things and want to find out others that would do well.
I planted two passion fruit vines ... one outdoors that is being trained up the southern side of a shed and is doing well. The other is thriving inside my polytunnel and it's being trained along the northern wall and I plan to bring it over the seating area in the tunnel. I'm really hoping for a crop!
There are also 2 grape vines in the tunnel surrounding the entrance at the west end, one green one red.
Two other things I'm interested in are ;
Kiwi - I'm told this can crop very well in a polytunnel or even outside on a south facing site?
Hops - I'd love to find the usual but also golden hops and grow from seed
Are there any other climbers that can do well here and give an edible crop of some sort? _________________ Living the good life on our rural Irish smallholding. Follow the learning curve on our interactive blogsite at www.sallygardens.typepad.com |
