Just thought I would point out that this wasn't as flipant a remark as it now seems to read to me.
This is a genuine offer.
Rent: €0.00 pa. Swap knowledge, crops etc. You may keep bees, poultry, there is more land (C. 2 acres) for a couple of sheep, goats etc. but would require fence repairs by you. Storage in my shed for tools, but not enough for rotovator type equipment as it's also my woodworking shed. You can put up pollytunnel etc, but in return I would want to share some space in it I can't afford to buy one myself. There is well water, but my preference would be you learnt to garden without water, or at the very least, minimum water, as I do. Sorry, no greenhouse, but put one up if you want.
My bees will be instructed to pollinate your crops as well as mine just remember their names, all 75,000 of them, they get insulted if you get it wrong
In return I would require you tend my livestock and orchids in my absence, about 10 days per year, about 4 or 5 days at a time.
Loads of free farmyard manure included.
If anyone is interested, PM me.
Bill.

That's weird! Where did my reply go?
Anyway, I did ask, jokingly, if you couldn't catch a bus, but I suppose the moments lost now

| I live in Waterford, and we've been searching for ages for an allotment. Eventually we've found somene who is turning a big field into allotments. It's going to cost about €300 a year for a standard allotment plot, but for that you get a water connection to each plot, which is good. The guy is very keen for it to be an oganic site and for everyone who has a plot to work together, so it looks like it'll be good. Maybe if enough people in an area got together and approached a farmer, he might be interested..

300e a year seems very expensive! We were paying 200e for the past 2 years but this year it has gone down to 130.00e.
Our plots are approx 30ft x 20ft with water laid on from standpipes all down the plots. We have a huge pile of free horse manure on site.
They were 200e and a second plot was then 50e as the owner was trying to encourage plot holders to take up a second one. This year we have a waiting list so in fairness she reduced the price overall. Two plots last year would have cost 250e, this year they are 260e, which is not bad.

Looks like I'm a poor businessman offering 260 sq metres for free!

Congratulations on the new website. It is pretty comprehensive! it is great to have a site devoted entirely to the allotment movement which is what it is rapidly becoming.

Hi sundew,
I just put my name down for a private allotment so hoping to get going in the next few weeks. I saw the waiting list too for county council allotments and figured its just not worth waiting that long, and I was told by the council they are not planning any additional allotments so private is the way to go at the moment. Its more expensive but there seems to be a few private allotments springing up to fill demand. And when you look at it, it probably doesn't work out that much more expensive as the price usually includes mulch and manure, sheds and the plot comes rotorvated, all of which you'd have to pay extra to do on a council allotment. We're getting around 100sq metres for approx 300e a year.

Hi Verge,
The allotments are being set up at the moment in Roundwood and in the early stages, I found out about them through this thread actually, look to page 2 as the owner mentioned there in a post he was setting them up and looking for interested people so I mailed him and went up to have a look at the site last weekend and the location is lovely, still to be layed out, fenced and rotorvated etc. but from talking to the owner it sounds like it will be a lovely set up. I believe there are contact details and a summary up on allotments.ie under wicklow. I can't wait to get started so hoping we can get on site in a few weeks to start preparing the beds for planting.
