I've a Lilac bush in my garden. It doesn't have a large amount of leaves on it but there is plenty of woody growth which appears to be from previous seasons growth.

This bush was already in the garden when I bought the house but never had an abundance of leaves. I'm guessing that it may be down to the fact that it hasn't been pruned for a few years.

What's the best way to prune the bush - I've read a previous post and found out that it should only be pruned after flowering but where do I prune it? I've so much woody growth it's hard to determine where is the best location.

I'm sure somebody here has more experience at this than I do.

Any advice/help is much appreciated.

Here's a link to a photo of the Lilac in question. (Not dial-up friendly)
