Hi guys,

I planted some early rocket and baby gem lettuces on Sunday in 1.5in * 1.5in plugs, I put in 3ish seeds to each plug and I am wondering when i should thin them?? The plan is to plant the rocket in pots a plug apart to use as cut and come again. And plant the gems 1 plant per 6in diameter pot.

Currently the seedlings are about 1.5 in tall, but with no true leaves yet, should I thin them to 1 seedling per plug at this point or wait?

I also have the same question for say Basil and Parsley (which I have yet to plant).

Thanks a lot.

I usually thin lettuce when it is 1 to 2 inches high. Works well for me. Just be careful not to disturb the roots of the seedling left behind too much. Lettuce are really shallow rooted and do not react well to root abuse. The safest way to thin them would be with a with a pair of scissors, cutting off at the base all but the strongest seedling in each cell.
