I had a go this year at growing tomatoes outside in containers with very poor results.

My question is will they come back next year (or are they even perrenial?) and are they alright just left outside in the meantime?

Its kind of pointless overwintering your tomatoes are I would class them as an annual in this country. You will get no fruit from them next year and if they do live on after winter then the plant will look very battered.
