Having read previous posts re the carcinogens in railway sleepers, is there a safe alternative of the same dimensions that can be used in the vicinity of a vegetable patch?

At present I have a row of them forming a border with the lawn and are recessed into the ground. I also have them supporting a raised border and intend to put the vegetable patch below it and am concerned about leaching.
