This is Caryopteris X clandonensis “Worchester Gold” commonly known as the Yellow leaved blue spirea or blue mist spirea.
A frost hardy small shrub growing to approx 0.6 metres (2ft) in height; with a spread of approx 0.6 metres (2ft).
A native of Eastern Asia this deciduous (sheds and renews leaves annually) variety is a great front of bed / border planting choice.
In August you will observe this plants bright blue flowers held above yellow leaves which are slightly aromatic, its flowering time can be extended through the practise of dead heading the spent blooms.
Give the Caryopteris a position in full sun towards the front of a border as stated earlier, in the larger garden you can use clusters of 5’s and 7’s planted next to red leaved plants for great contrast.
In the smaller gardens the use of just one plant is quite acceptable; just remember to provide that sunny location.
For those of you who dislike too many yellow leaved plants in the garden why not go for Caryopteris X clandonensis “Kew Blue” which has grey-green leaves. _________________ If you benefited from irishgardeners.com, please link to us or tell others, so that the site can grow and benefit more gardeners.
