This is Cordyline australis “Torbay Dazzler” commonly known as the New Zealand cabbage tree or Ti Kouka.

Classed as a large shrub or small tree, it is dramatic and tropical looking
As the common name suggests, this plant hails from New Zealand.
It often begins life in many Irish gardens as spikey focal point in containers or borders eventually growing to a tree.
Cordyline australis 'Torbay Dazzler' is evergreen, with cream leaves sporting a green stripe running along the leaves centre.
The plant will flower, although it must reach a height of 1.5 mtrs before displaying its white, slightly scented, flower panicles.

Palm-like, the New Zealand cabbage tree grows to an ultimate height of 6 metres (18ft), with a canopy spread of around 4 metres (12ft).
All this growth is achieved steadily over a fifteen-year period.
Being from New Zealand, Cordyline australis may need protection when we receive harsh frosts, simply wrapping with a sheet of horticultural fleece will often prevent frosty leaf blackening.
When choosing a planting location, select a position in sun to partial shade with a reasonably fertile soil, this will ensure good strong healthy growth.

Probably the cordyline’s most important feature is its striking architectural form, this means it is ideal to use as a punctuation point between drifts of soft leafed perennials in a herbaceous border.
Cordyline australis “Torbay Dazzler’s” narrow leaves looks really well teamed with the perennial broadleaves of Hosta, Berginia and Pulmonaria.
